Elizabeth Scharfenberg was the sister of Ann Catharina Scharfenberg. She was born in Leimbach, Sachsen-meiningen (Thuringia) on February 2, 1811. She married about 1831 in Leimbach to Sebastian Kieselbach, a concertmaster. On May 17, 1860, she arrived in New York City aboard the sailing ship Loisana with her 7 children and listed herself as a widow. She died in Jefferson City, Missouri on May 5, 1889. When Elizabeth (Scharfenberg) Kieselbach arrived in New York City she listed Cleveland, Ohio as her distination. It is presumed she had other family there. Elizabeth and her family went directlyi to Jefferson City, Missouri after her arrival in New York City.
Elizabeth (Scharfenberg) Kieselbach, her children and the family of her deceased sister''s husband, Johann Valentin Kallenbach, and his second wife, Maria Magdalena traveled to Jefferson City by river and landed at Osage City during June, 1860. Apparently Elizabeth had a large sum of rnone^ with her which she carried in a salt jar. This was the money she hoped to use to establish her family in the new country. The legend goes on to say that one of the Kieselbach''s stole the money from her and she arrived in Jefferson City, Missouri penniless and worked for the rest of her life as a maid or housekeeper. This must have been quite a downfall for her consideing that in Germany her father owned a mill and her husband was the town conertmaster. There is a cousin in Kansas City, MO named Marilyn Schultz who still owns the salt jar. (Info above from Herb Simon -herbsimon@aol.com)
An obituary appeared in the Jefferson City Weekly Tribune dated May 6, 1889, page 8, column 3 that said Elizabeth was born on February 2, 1811; she was buried on May 6, 1889 in the Evangelical Cemetary (latr moved to the Riverview Cemetary) om Jefferson City, MO. She died on May 5, 1889 in Jefferson City, Cole County, Missouri. The article said, "Died, yesterday morning at 4:30 o''clock, Mrs. Elizabeth Kieselbach, age 78 years. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 2:30 o''clock from the Lutheran Church on Washington Street. Friends are respectfully invited to attend."
